Exercise Physiologist — MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology. Runs the physiology clinic at St Mary's University.
Luke Colgan is an exercise physiologist specialising in physiological profiling, with a particular interest in endurance performance. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Sport Rehabilitation and an MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Physiology.
He works as an exercise physiologist at St Mary's University, where he runs the physiology clinic and has worked across physiology, biomechanics and rehabilitation. His research interest is in ergogenic aids, though endurance physiology is the area he keeps returning to.
He treats the athlete as an individual first. Physiological data carries a great deal and is still only one part of the picture, so a result is read against training history, background and the demands of someone's week rather than on its own. What holds his interest in testing is that no two people produce the same response, and working out why.
He climbed for six years, bouldering and sport climbing, before taking up running two years ago. Since then he has raced ultra distances up to 100 miles, with a 200-mile race as the next target. His own training is built on consistency and on staying uninjured, which he takes to be what lets endurance keep improving over time.
At DVOTION Labs he runs the physiology assessments: VO₂ max, blood lactate profiling, resting metabolic rate, and sweat and hydration testing.
