Good posture is one of the most commonly given pieces of advice in health and performance. Stand tall. Pull your shoulders back. Engage your core. These instructions have good intentions. But they rest on a misunderstanding of what posture actually is — and why trying to hold it rarely produces lasting change.

Posture is typically taught as a position to achieve and maintain. Stack the spine, retract the shoulders, brace the midline. The assumption is that there is a correct configuration that, if held, produces better movement and less pain.
The evidence for this is weak. Research consistently shows that no single resting posture reliably predicts pain, injury or performance across populations. Athletes with what would be described as 'poor posture' perform well. People with textbook alignment develop chronic pain. The relationship between visible shape and outcome is far less direct than the posture-as-position model assumes.
Postural corrections that focus on the position without addressing what produced it tend to be temporary at best. The shape reverts within minutes because nothing that created it has changed.
What looks like posture — the way a person stands, the position of the pelvis, whether the ribcage is elevated or dropped, how weight distributes across the feet — is the visible output of a movement strategy. It is what the system looks like when all its current constraints, adaptations and pressure management habits are visible at rest.
Change the strategy and the posture changes. The position the body takes reflects the organisation it currently has access to — which is a product of the positions it can reach, the pressure it can manage, and the options available to it at that moment.
Telling the system to look different while the underlying organisation stays the same is the equivalent of pressing on the surface of a problem without addressing its cause. The surface may change briefly. The system restores the shape it needs.
Even in stillness, the body is active. It makes continuous micro-adjustments about where to place the centre of gravity, where to let pressure accumulate, which segments to stiffen and which to release. This is appropriate — the system is solving the problem of managing a heavy torso in a gravitational field, in real time, constantly.
The shape you see in a person standing still is the current solution to that problem. It is a strategy. It can be a more or less efficient strategy. But addressing it requires understanding what it is solving for — not demanding it look different.
In this model, efficient movement involves a continuous oscillation between two organisational states — yielding inward under load and redirecting outward in response. This oscillation is what allows the body to absorb incoming forces and then express them.
Postural patterns that look 'incorrect' are typically cases where the body has become fixed at one end of this oscillation. Too stiff to yield. Too collapsed to redirect. The system has lost the capacity to move between states and has settled into a compensatory position as its only available option.
The goal is not to find a better position to hold. It is to restore the capacity to oscillate — to access both strategies fluidly. When that capacity is restored, the body finds an appropriate shape without being instructed. The posture improves not because someone corrected it, but because the system no longer needs the old shape.
If posture is an output of strategy, then postural work that operates at the level of strategy will produce visible, durable change. Cueing the system into positions without changing the underlying organisation will not.
This is why strategy-based movement work focuses on restoring access to positions and ranges — the ability to yield, to contain pressure, to access internal rotation — rather than prescribing shapes to hold. When the system can access the strategy, the shape follows. Not because of instruction, but because the constraint that was driving the old shape has been resolved.
Awareness of habitual positions can be useful. But sustained correction without addressing the underlying strategy rarely produces lasting change. The most durable improvement comes from restoring what the system can access, not from monitoring how it looks.
The assessment identifies what the system is currently organising around — what positions it uses, what pressure management strategy it has adopted, and what it does not currently have access to. From that, a training direction is built that changes the strategy rather than the visible shape.
