Training creates physiological change. But without retesting, you cannot know exactly what has changed, whether your training zones are still accurate, or whether the plan is actually working.

Training progress is usually judged through performance outcomes — race times, competition results, how hard a given pace or load feels. These are useful signals, but they are lagging indicators. They tell you what happened, not why.
More importantly, they do not tell you whether your training zones are still accurate. If your VO₂ max has improved and your lactate thresholds have shifted, the zones you are using may now be slightly too easy — meaning you are underloading the aerobic system even when following the same programme.
A retest after a training block shows whether the adaptations you were training for have occurred. Did VO₂ max increase? Did the lactate threshold shift upward? Did force production improve?
It also updates your zones. Training zones set from a test 6 months ago may no longer be accurate if significant adaptation has occurred. Using outdated zones means training at the wrong intensities — too easy, too hard, or in the wrong distribution.
In structured training, retesting every 3–6 months is a reasonable interval. If a training block has been specifically designed to improve a measurable marker — lactate threshold, power output, VO₂ max — retesting at the end of the block confirms whether it worked.
This is one of the ways DVOTION coaching uses testing data. The initial assessment sets the baseline. Periodic retesting keeps the programme honest and the zones accurate.
Most meaningful aerobic adaptations take 8–12 weeks of consistent training to become measurable. Retesting before that window is unlikely to show significant change.
The testing protocol is the same. What changes is the context — you now have baseline data to compare against, which makes the retest results more informative.
