HYROX is eight kilometres of running broken up by eight strength stations, which makes it a race decided by how well each half survives the other. Most testing addresses one half. The interaction between them is where the race is actually lost.

A kilometre of running, a station, a kilometre of running, a station, eight times. Nothing in it is maximal in isolation. The running pace is well inside what any of these athletes could hold for eight kilometres on fresh legs, and the stations are loads they could complete comfortably standing at the start line.
The difficulty is entirely in the sequence. You arrive at each run having just produced high force, and you arrive at each station with a heart rate that has not come down. The quality being tested is not endurance and it is not strength — it is how much of each you retain in the presence of the other.
This is why single-system testing under-describes a HYROX athlete. An aerobic profile tells you what the running costs when running is all you are doing, and a force profile tells you what you can produce when you are fresh. Neither describes the eleventh minute.
The running in HYROX is not raced at threshold. It sits below it, because the stations are going to demand something and arriving at them already in deficit is how a race unravels in the back half.
That makes the first threshold — the ceiling of genuinely sustainable work — the more useful of the two for pacing. It sets the running intensity you can hold while still having something available for the sled and the burpees. The second threshold still matters for what the hard training sessions look like, but the race itself is paced against the lower one.
Endurance Performance Profiling gives you both threshold systems in one appointment — the lactate thresholds from the lactate profile, the ventilatory ones from the maximal test that follows it. That matters more here than in a pure running event. HYROX athletes often come from a strength background, and their thresholds sit in less predictable places relative to their maximum than a lifelong runner's do.
Station performance is force production against time, repeatedly, while fatigued. What a force plate adds over knowing your numbers in the gym is the shape of how that force is produced — braking, propulsion, impulse, and how much each leg contributes.
Inter-limb asymmetry is worth measuring rather than assuming. It is common, it is not automatically a defect, and its relationship with performance is not uniform across tasks — which is precisely why it is a strategy finding to interpret rather than a number to be alarmed by. In an event with a sled push and a lunge, how the two sides share the work is directly relevant.
The countermovement jump is also the most practical way to monitor neuromuscular status across a training block. It is sensitive enough to reflect accumulated fatigue, which matters in a sport where the temptation is to train both systems hard simultaneously and discover the interference effect the expensive way.
The single most common HYROX complaint is that the running falls apart after the sled. That is a specific, trainable quality, and it is not addressed by more running or more sled work in isolation.
What it needs is exposure to the transition itself, and what testing offers is a baseline for where the compromise is happening. If your threshold is genuinely high and your running still collapses after a station, the limitation is not aerobic. If your force numbers are strong and the stations still empty you, the limitation is not strength. Knowing which of the two it is stops a training block being aimed at the wrong system for twelve weeks.
This is the case for testing both halves rather than the one that matches your background — which is usually the one an athlete chooses when they choose only one.
HYROX rewards even effort and punishes a fast opening more severely than most endurance events, because the cost of going too hard early is paid on the stations rather than only on the runs.
A measured first threshold gives you a running intensity to hold rather than a pace to chase, which matters when the pace at a given effort changes through the race as fatigue accumulates. Heart rate is a poor guide during and immediately after station work, so the useful anchor is what you established before the race rather than what the watch says during it.
The other underdone element is fuelling. A race in the sixty to ninety minute range for most athletes sits at the point where carbohydrate availability starts to matter, and where sweat losses in a warm hall are higher than the duration suggests. Neither is decisive the way it is in an Ironman, and neither is negligible.
It depends on your background, which is the point. An athlete from a running background usually learns more from force and movement data, and an athlete from a strength background usually learns more from the endurance profile. The test that tells you most is generally the one describing the half you have trained least.
It contributes, and it is not the number that decides the race. The intensity you can hold while still producing force at the stations matters more than the ceiling, which is why the thresholds are the more useful output of the assessment.
Mostly by getting the easy running genuinely easy, so the hard sessions in both systems remain recoverable. Tested thresholds make that possible in a way that perceived effort does not, particularly for athletes whose strength background makes moderate running feel comfortable.
Early enough that the zones shape the block — twelve to sixteen weeks out. Force data is worth repeating more often than that if you are monitoring fatigue, since a countermovement jump takes minutes and reflects neuromuscular status across a block.
