Confidence in training and racing is not fixed. It shifts with fatigue, stress, bad sessions and comparison with others. Understanding how and why confidence changes under fatigue — and what to do about it — is one of the most practical psychological skills an athlete can develop.

When an athlete is fresh and training is going well, confidence tends to feel stable and accessible. When fatigue accumulates — particularly in the later stages of a heavy training block or in the final miles of a race — that sense of certainty and self-belief often degrades.
This is not weakness. It is partly physiological. Fatigue impairs cognitive function, emotional regulation and the brain's ability to accurately appraise situations. Under high physical stress, the brain's default tendency is toward threat perception rather than capability appraisal. Athletes interpret ambiguous signals negatively.
