Measure how much fluid and sodium you lose during exercise and use it to plan what you need to replace.

Your sweat rate tells us how quickly you are losing fluid, while your sweat sodium concentration tells us how much sodium is contained within those losses. Together, they allow us to estimate your hourly fluid and sodium losses during the conditions in which you were tested.

Sweat is not just water.

We use these results alongside the duration and conditions of your training or competition to build practical hydration targets. For longer sessions and events, this gives you a starting point for how much to drink and how much sodium to replace, which can then be adjusted for changes in temperature, intensity and environment.

    How we measure it

    Measured two ways in the same session. The FLOWBIO S1 sensor, worn against the skin, reports sweat rate continuously as you work. Alongside it your body mass is recorded before and after and every drink is weighed, which gives whole-body sweat loss independently of the sensor. Two methods that agree is a result worth holding; two that disagree is worth knowing about before a plan is built on either.

    Why it matters

    This is the figure your fluid plan is built from. It tells you roughly how much you would need to carry or collect per hour to keep replacement at a chosen proportion of what you lose.

  • 02Sweat sodium concentrationHow salty your sweat is, in milligrams of sodium per litre.

    How we measure it

    The S1 sensor collects sweat through a microfluidic channel as it leaves the skin and reports sodium concentration during the session rather than from a sample analysed afterwards. It is a regional measurement, taken at one site on the body.

    Why it matters

    It separates a heavy sweater from a salty sweater, which are not the same thing. Two athletes losing the same volume can need very different amounts of sodium. Because concentration varies between areas of the body, the figure estimates your whole-body value rather than measuring it directly.

    How we measure it

    Sweat rate multiplied by sweat sodium concentration, giving milligrams of sodium per hour at the intensity worked at.

    Why it matters

    This is what an electrolyte strategy is sized against. It also shows whether the product you currently use is anywhere near your losses, or whether food alone already covers them.

    How we measure it

    The weight of the fluid you chose to drink during the assessment, expressed as a percentage of your total sweat loss.

    Why it matters

    It shows whether your habitual drinking sits close to your losses, well short of them, or above them. Athletes are surprised in both directions, and this is the figure that makes the gap concrete.

    How we measure it

    The difference between your pre- and post-exercise body mass, measured the same way both times, with wet kit removed and skin and hair dried.

    Why it matters

    A reference point for judging longer sessions, and for deciding how much of a deficit you are willing to accept in an event where drinking is restricted.

Sweat rate and sodium loss are reported as estimates, and always alongside the conditions they were recorded in. Both change with intensity, temperature, humidity and airflow, so a figure without its conditions attached would be misleading.

Your own fluid and sodium losses, measured across an hour of exercise rather than taken from a population average.

Measured with

  • FLOWBIO S1 sweat sensor — sweat rate and sweat sodium, continuously, as you work
  • Calibrated scales — weighed before and after, to the gram
  • Treadmill or cycle ergometer — you test in the mode you train in

Sixty to ninety minutes in total, most of which is the exercise itself. The workload is held at a meaningful training or race intensity on a treadmill, Wattbike or cycle ergometer — it is not a maximal test.

  1. 01ConsultationYour sport and upcoming events, typical training duration and intensity, current hydration and electrolyte intake, any problems you have had in training or racing, the conditions you expect on the day, and your recent food, fluid and caffeine intake. The testing intensity is chosen from this.
  2. 02Pre-exercise measurementsYou empty your bladder, then body mass, full bottle weight, room temperature and humidity, clothing and the planned intensity are recorded. Body mass is measured privately, with clothing removed or in the same minimal dry clothing used afterwards.
  3. 03Sensor fittedThe chosen area of skin is cleaned and dried, and the FLOWBIO S1 sensor is applied. It collects sweat as it leaves the skin and reports sweat rate and sodium concentration continuously through the session, rather than producing one figure at the end.
  4. 04Exercise protocolControlled exercise on a treadmill, Wattbike or cycle ergometer at an intensity representing a meaningful training or race effort, for up to an hour. Heart rate, speed or power, perceived exertion, fluid consumed and the room conditions are monitored throughout. You may drink, and every drink is weighed.
  5. 05Post-exercise measurementsYour remaining drink is weighed, the sensor is removed, wet clothing is removed, skin and hair are dried, and post-exercise body mass is recorded the same way as before. The mass change is what the sensor is checked against.
  6. 06Review and reportThe figures are reviewed with you before you leave, along with the fluid and sodium ranges to practise. The written report follows by email.

Questions we get asked.

Sweat testing measures two things about you: how much fluid you lose per hour, and how much sodium is in that sweat. The first is a sweat rate test. The second is sweat analysis, sometimes called a sweat composition test. Both are done here in one session, because either on its own leaves half the question open — a litre an hour tells you nothing about what to put in it, and a sodium concentration tells you nothing about how much of it you will lose. Sweat rate is measured twice over: continuously by the sensor, and independently from your body mass before and after with every drink weighed.

The assessment measures a normal training day, so keep the day before normal. Eat and drink as you usually would — do not deliberately overhydrate and do not restrict. Avoid alcohol in the 24 hours before and avoid unusually strenuous training the day before. Bring the kit and footwear you normally train in, the drink you normally use during exercise, and a list of any supplements or medications. Tell us if you are unwell or have recently had vomiting, diarrhoea or a fever — the assessment is better rescheduled than run on a day that will not represent you.

It gives you an individual starting point, not one fixed amount for every session. Your strategy also depends on how long the event is, the temperature and humidity, how the intensity changes, whether fluid is within reach, how much you can comfortably drink, how your gut tolerates it, and how much sodium your normal diet already provides. Replacing 100 per cent of your fluid and sodium losses during exercise is not always necessary, and drinking to excess carries its own risk.

No. A VO₂ max assessment measures cardiorespiratory fitness and progresses towards a maximal effort. This one holds a longer, controlled workload so that sweating can be measured under conditions that represent how you train or race. If you have already had VO₂, threshold or heart-rate testing, that data is used to choose the most appropriate intensity for this assessment.

No. Sweat rate and sodium losses change with exercise intensity, temperature, humidity, airflow, indoor versus outdoor exercise, clothing, heat acclimation, fitness and the sport itself. Your result is therefore reported alongside the exact conditions it was recorded in. Athletes preparing for a markedly different environment sometimes repeat the assessment — once in cooler conditions, and again before a hot-weather event.

Sodium concentration differs between areas of the body, so a reading taken at one site estimates your whole-body sweat sodium rather than measuring it directly. It is reported as an estimate for that reason, and it is still specific to you — the differences between athletes are considerably larger than the uncertainty in the method.

No urine sample is collected or analysed. You will be asked to empty your bladder before the assessment begins. If you need the toilet during the exercise period the result becomes unreliable, because urine volume is not collected and so cannot be accounted for in the calculation.

Privately, with clothing removed or in the same minimal dry clothing before and after exercise. The comparison only works if both measurements are taken the same way, which is why wet kit is removed and skin and hair are dried before the second one.

Yes, and you should drink as you normally would. Every drink is weighed so that the fluid you take in is included in the calculation rather than hidden in it. Bring the drink you usually use during exercise.

The appointment is £150 and takes about 90 minutes. That covers the initial consultation, the pre-exercise measurements, up to an hour of controlled exercise, the post-exercise measurements and the review of your results. The exercise itself is matched to your event, so the shorter end applies when a shorter effort answers the question.
