What this assessment measures

VO₂ Max

Your aerobic ceiling measured directly using breath-by-breath gas analysis via the KORR CardioCoach Max. Not an estimate from a wearable device.

Blood Lactate Thresholds (LT1 & LT2)

The two lactate threshold points that define your training zones with precision. Measured from fingertip blood samples taken at each stage of the progressive protocol.

Individual Training Zones

Five training zones derived from your measured thresholds — not from age-based formulas or population averages. Built specifically from your physiology.

FatMax

The exercise intensity at which fat oxidation is highest, calculated from your gas exchange data. Relevant for long-course endurance athletes managing fuel across extended efforts.

Sweat Rate Analysis

Individual sweat rate measured during the protocol and used to produce personalised fluid and electrolyte replacement guidance for training and competition.

Written Report

A full written report delivered within 48 hours of testing — covering all measurements, your training zones, and specific training direction based on your data.

How the assessment works

The appointment is approximately 60 minutes. Testing takes place on a treadmill (running) or Wattbike (cycling), selected based on your primary sport. Intensity increases in structured stages throughout the protocol. Expired gases are analysed breath by breath using the KORR CardioCoach Max, and a small fingertip blood sample is taken at the end of each stage to measure blood lactate. Initial findings are discussed at the close of the appointment. The full written report follows within 48 hours.

Preparation: arrive well-rested and well-hydrated. Fast for at least three hours beforehand. Avoid intense training the day before.

Equipment and methodology

Testing uses the KORR CardioCoach Max, a medical-grade metabolic analyser that measures expired gases breath by breath throughout the progressive protocol. Blood lactate is sampled by fingertip prick at the end of each intensity stage. The assessment is led by Aris Myrkos, DVOTION's Head of Sport Physiology, who holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology and specialises in metabolic testing protocol design and clinical interpretation of results.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be an elite athlete?

No. The assessment is appropriate for any athlete who trains with a purpose. The data is equally relevant at any performance level — from serious recreational runners to competitive club athletes and professionals.

Is the test on a treadmill or a bike?

Both are available. The protocol is selected based on your primary sport. If you are unsure which is more appropriate, we can advise when you make your enquiry.

How is this different from the estimate my watch gives me?

Wearable devices estimate VO₂ max from heart rate patterns using population averages. This assessment measures your oxygen consumption and blood lactate directly at multiple intensities, giving you your actual numbers rather than a statistical approximation.

What does the written report include?

Your VO₂ max, the full lactate curve, LT1 and LT2 threshold points (with corresponding paces, heart rates, or wattages), individually derived training zones, FatMax, and specific training direction based on your data. Delivered within 48 hours of the appointment.

How often should I retest?

Retesting every 12 to 16 weeks gives enough time for meaningful physiological changes to develop and be measured accurately. Some athletes test more frequently when building toward a specific event.
